As we enter the 21st century people were moving to Maine from across America in search of “the good life”. Others left their homes seeking fortune and adventure. Five hundred years before Columbus landed on American soil, Leif Ericson may have explored this area with a crew thirty viking sailors – but it’s believed he didn’t set foot here!

As we enter the 21st century, people were moving to Maine from across America in search of “the good life.” Others left their homes on a quest for fortune and adventure- but not all stories have happy endings!

Leif Ericson was one such explorer before Columbus “discovered” this land five hundred years ago; he may very well have landed somewhere along our coast back then, as evidence suggests they explored as far northward up into Canada by wayland shores where Eric’s son named Jarvis lived out his days after being shipwrecked off saint John.

The land that now makes up the state of Maine has a long and complicated history. Originally part of Massachusetts Bay Colony, it fell under nominal authority with Nova Scotia County Sunbury in 1749 after being conquered by Britain during their War for Independence from France (1755-1763). It was eventually divided into its current boundaries when New Brunswick separated settlement patterns on both sides were frequently debated until finally agreeing upon what’s called “the Great Thicket” as an effective border to separate them 50 years later after America became independent!

The Maine Legislature sent troops to protect the state’s border claims in 1839, and it nearly led to war with Britain. They were supported by several hundred regulars from Quebec who crossed over into Vermont when they arrived at Madawaska River Valley neartextile mills where handmade serapes (paisley patterns) have been made for centuries before this event occurred.

It is reported that nearly 50,000 troops were readied to fight for the rights of man and liberty. Major General Winfield Scott was sent from America in response – he managed to work out an agreement between two sides before they reached bloodshed when so-called “The War Of The Aroostook”.

Separation from Massachusetts

The tension between Bostonians and frontier dwellers boiled over in 1819 when a group of farmers attempted to break away from Massachusetts. The attempt failed, but it highlighted how far resentment had spread throughout the state against Puritans with their backwards ways – leading some coastal merchants who were now able (because they held most political power) take control back by warring on Britain during its War Of 1812 scorning British attempts at mediation!

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 secured the Union by preserving a numerical balance between free and slave states. The separation movement went forward, but this alignment with Congress led to Maine’s admittance as an official member in 1821 rather than 19 years earlier when it became part of New Hampshire for constitutionality.

2. Eat lobster rolls at the Lobster Shack in Kennebunkport

Kennebunkport, located between Wells and Ogunquit, is a lovely seaside village that offers all sorts of interesting attractions including the Bush compound (summer home of former President George H.W. Bush), an impressive Cliff Walk along the seashore, a charming downtown area with red brick sidewalks and many restaurants, boutiques and shops, and gorgeous ocean views.

3. Spend an afternoon shopping on Main Street in Bar Harbor

Bar Harbor is a village located on Mount Desert Island. It is one of Maine’s most popular summer destinations and the largest community on the island, home to over 3200 inhabitants. While visiting Acadia National Park, be sure to spend an afternoon browsing the boutiques and shops on Main Street. There are over 200 stores in this picturesque village.

4. Take a ferry to Monhegan Island for the day

Monhegan Island, located 10 miles off the coast of Maine in the Gulf of Maine, offers visitors a unique and unforgettable day trip. This small island is a popular artist colony that offers many quaint shops and galleries, great restaurants and cafes, stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean from almost anywhere on the island, boats to hire for fishing or sightseeing, and plenty of hiking trails.

5. Visit the Farnsworth Museum in Rockland

The Farnsworth Art Museum is a world-class museum devoted to American art. It is home to a significant collection of works by 19th- and 20th-century fine artists, including Albert Bierstadt, Henry Fuseli, Horatio Greenough, Edward Hicks, Winslow Homer, Martin Johnson Heade and John Kensett.
